3.18 Setup of a Nivel220 (RS485) with long cables
Cables supplied by Leica Geosystems and CAT cables
General information
For the installation of the cables of the Nivel220 sensors, the general rules for the installation of electrical wiring
apply.
Avoid sharp bends and lay the cable in large loops within the range of rotating or moving parts.
When installing the cables, please observe the already existing installation of electric system.
After having completed the installation, please drive through all possible positions in order to make sure that the
cables are not touching, stretched or even squeezed by any moving parts.
Please consider that a well-planned and thoroughly carried out electric installation does not only protect the cables against
damages, but also looks professional.
Sensor auxiliary supply
Power for the Nivel220 sensor must be supplied externally. The power is connected to the sensor using a LEMO cable.
The auxiliary supply voltage at the Nivel220 sensor must be within the permissible range. Refer to "Nivel 200 User Manual". The
correct operation of the sensor cannot be guaranteed when the supply voltage is not within this range and it can be damaged
by overvoltages. For the voltage drop along long supply cables take into account and, if necessary, correspondingly increase the
voltage at the supply end. The voltage drop is given by the following equation:
voltage drop [V] = resistance per m [
Ω/m] * 2 * cable length [m] * current [A]
It can be assumed that the voltage drop is varying should the current through the sensor appear to fluctuate. A Nivel220
requires typically 50mA. Refer to "Nivel 200 User Manual".
Use the Leica Geosystems power supply recommended by Leica Geosystems to ensure the correct functionality of the Nivel220
sensor.
